For those, who can handle being beaten around, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a great addition to their games library. The god-level difficulty could be off-putting for those who have never played a Soulslike action RPG. It is engaging, maintains the adrenaline rush, and forces you to devise your own fighting technique. The combat system is the best thing about this game. Otherwise, Fallen Dynasty presents a beautiful rendition of a chaotic world with detailed outlines of characters, terrain, and buildings. It’s a letdown that Team Ninja did not handle the story-telling the way it should have and it feels like a waste of a great opportunity. Wo Lang: Fallen Dynasty is based on a rich lore that has already inspired a lot of stories in the modern day. The only way I could get past these hurdles in Fallen Dynasty was when I kept on attacking and never gave the enemy a chance to retaliate. And this comes from someone who defeated two Valkyries in God of War quite early in the game without proper equipment. I was killed around 15 times before I could finish him off, but to add salt to my suffering, this dude transformed all Resident Evil-style with a full health bar and even deadlier attacks. It throws you headfirst in a boss fight with Zhang Liang, the first boss of the game. The first boss fight with Zhang Liang is too hard. It requires you to use evasion, parry, and attacks in addition to blocking the enemy attacks to triumph. The combat system includes a mechanism that dictates what attack you can block and for how long. The game doesn’t allow you to block enemy attacks endlessly. This not only makes it hard to find an opening to attack but also hard to evade and counter those attacks. Once you think you can learn the attack patterns of the enemies, they change their timing to catch you by surprise. What makes the combat special is the unpredictability of enemies, which also makes up for its lack of enemy variety. If you are a rage quitter, I pray for the well-being of your controller while enemies slice your character nice and clean in the game. The game expects you to die repeatedly and you die a lot. Fighting enemies with a morale higher than yours is always lethal. This rank lets you know how tough an opponent is. A slight mistake can cost you your life, sending you back to the last checkpoint with a penalty on your morale rank. Whether you are fighting a boss-level enemy or a low-level soldier, you can never drop your guard. (Screengrab)Ĭoming to action, it is the lifeline of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. These flags are the checkpoint in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo let you walk through the period of political and social unrest in the Later Han Dynasty of 184 AD but with demonic and supernatural elements sprinkled on top. The game’s story is based on Luo Guanzhong’s 14th Century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, considered as one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. The tale of this era has inspired a lot of fantasy series and fictional works (including the Dynasty Warriors game franchise) and the latest to derive from this time period is Wo Lang: Fallen Dynasty. This time period caught my curiosity ever since I watched the “legendary human warrior” Lü Bu fight Mjölnir-wielding Thor in Netflix’s Record of Ragnarok anime series. The Three Kingdoms era in China was a turbulent time, highlighted by their kings and great warriors who fought for supremacy over one another.
